Story of The Liberian Learning Center

The Liberian Learning Center is Liberia’s most environmentally friendly and energy efficient facility running entirely on solar energy primarily, utilizing rainwater collection technology and constructed using earth compressed bricks – the building function largely on passive systems bringing together simple smart technologies for maximum productivity.

The first-of-its-kind, environmentally friendly, and energy-efficient learning center in Liberia now stands tall—fully powered by solar energy, harnessing rainwater, and embodying sustainability in a way that has never been seen before.

The Liberian Learning Center

Empowerment Squared believes that education is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone for transformative change. The Liberian Learning Center, located strategically in the middle of Paynesville, Liberia, embodies our vision of lifelong learning, community empowerment, and systemic impact.

Education as the pathway to transformation

Education is the most powerful tool we can provide our youth, unlocking their potential and creating pathways to brighter futures. The Liberian Learning Center is built to reflect this, and is an inclusive ecosystem dedicated to literacy, skills development, workforce readiness, and entrepreneurial innovation.

We provide access to educational resources, mentorship, and spaces designed for dynamic learning. Through carefully curated programs, young Liberians gain knowledge, confidence, and leadership skills to shape their lives and communities actively.

Community at the core

We put the voices and solutions of Liberians front and center. The Liberian Learning Center fosters real ownership and long-term resilience by integrating community insights and cultural values into our programs.

Our commitment is not simply about infrastructure, but about building capacities, facilitating meaningful stakeholder engagement, and actively nurturing local leadership.

Our partnerships with local community-based organizations further amplify our reach and effectiveness, ensuring our impact resonates across Paynesville and beyond, empowering over 150,000 youth and young adults.

Partnerships made for local impact and global reach

Empowerment Squared recognizes the critical role of collaboration. Our success is built on strategic partnerships with governmental bodies, civil society, international donors, and local enterprises.

These partnerships have allowed us to leverage global expertise and resources, fueling our mission for systemic educational and socio-economic transformation.

For this reason, we invite collaboration from individuals, organizations, and volunteers who share our passion for meaningful, lasting change.

Innovation with integrity

Our vision incorporates innovation responsibly and creatively. The Liberian Learning Center features a state-of-the-art building designed by internationally recognized Canadian architects McCallumSather, who skillfully blended innovation with local sensibilities.

The center utilizes environmentally sustainable practices. It harnesses solar power, rainwater harvesting, and passive cooling methods to deal with the unique challenges posed by Liberia’s climate and infrastructure limitations.

Locally sourced materials and local craftsmanship have shaped this remarkable building, showing that innovation can be embedded deeply within community roots.

Locally based, but connected globally

The Liberian Learning Center reflects the power of education and community engagement to drive national renewal and global solidarity. Our model aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those advocating for quality education, infrastructure resilience, and inclusive growth.

Through the Liberian Learning Center, Empowerment Squared is contributing to an enduring legacy where young Liberians can become empowered leaders, innovative entrepreneurs, and vital contributors to a prosperous future.
